VoltH2, DIF Capital Partners and Virya Energy join forces in green hydrogen

Bergen-op-Zoom, Netherlands, June 21, 2022 - VoltH2, developer of green hydrogen, is selling a majority stake to Virya Energy and DIF Capital Partners. The two new shareholders, both active in green energy production, innovation and sustainable investment, are bringing additional capital and expertise to VoltH2 to accelerate the development of European green hydrogen production capacity.

To fulfill the ambitions of the European Green Deal, fossil fuels must be replaced by renewable energy sources as soon as possible. In addition to the development of solar and wind generation capacity, for example, green hydrogen is playing an increasing role. For example, research firm DNV[1] expects hydrogen to make up 15% of the energy mix by 2050, representing an investment of approximately EUR 6.5 trillion. Particularly in sectors that consume a lot of energy, and are thus highly polluting, green hydrogen is essential to achieve the required sustainability.

Young company, big player

Green hydrogen is becoming one of the building blocks of the energy transition. VoltH2 is fully committed to this evolution by realizing much-needed production capacity. Founded in 2020 by energy entrepreneur André Jurres, the company unfolded concrete plans for production sites in Vlissingen, Terneuzen and Delfzijl in just twenty months. Together, these plants will account for 75 MW at the start and gradually scale up to 250 MW. With this planned capacity, VoltH2 is currently a leading player in Europe with a large number of projects in the pipeline in addition. To realize the projects and further expand the pipeline, DIF Capital Partners and Virya Energy have now joined as shareholders.

Originally Dutch, DIF Capital Partners invests in infrastructure companies and projects, primarily in Europe, the Americas and Australia. Sustainability and the energy transition are an integral part of DIF's investment strategies and existing investment portfolios.

Gijs Voskuyl, Partner at DIF Capital Partners, explains the investment in VoltH2: "We see the demand for green hydrogen increasing significantly in the near future. As a sustainable investor, we naturally want to play a leading role in this. Because of its vision and advanced plans, VoltH2 is an ideal partner to realize our ambitions."

1 GW of green energy

Between the Belgian energy holding company Virya Energy and VoltH2, there was already an initial cooperation for the green hydrogen plant in Terneuzen since 2021. Through further cooperation with VoltH2 and DIF Capital Partners, Virya Energy aims to contribute to sustainable industrial processes, sustainable mobility and more flexible energy production.

Paul Tummers, CEO of Virya Energy said, "We have already built more than 1 GW of renewable generation capacity today. For us, green hydrogen is an important vector to eventually decarbonize our economy and society. With this partnership, we can exchange knowledge with three parties, each from our own expertise, and leverage our scale to build out the necessary capacity faster and more efficiently to contribute to the energy transition."

André Jurres, Managing Director of VoltH2, concludes, "This investment demonstrates the confidence in green hydrogen and in the growth of VoltH2. With the involvement of DIF Capital Partners and Virya Energy, we can anchor VoltH2 locally, fulfill our ambitions and play a crucial role in the European energy market and energy transition."
