Zeeland Waterstofland develops innovative and flexible distribution system for green hydrogen

For the energy transition, the industry is gradually preparing for the production of large quantities of green hydrogen (by electrolysis), which in the future will be distributed mainly through the hydrogen network. However, the many small generators (electrolyzers) and users need an economically attractive and flexible distribution system for green hydrogen much earlier. A requirement is that the functionalities of this system score as well as the existing mature fossil fuel distribution system (which is a proven infrastructure).

Lead partner Vitrite Middelburg is developing - in collaboration with Blue H Engineering, VoltH2, Yerseke Engine Service (YES) and Impuls Zeeland - a flexible system (hydrogen swapping tank container) to flexibly distribute green hydrogen, before everyone is connected to the hydrogen grid and SMEs (SMEs) start generating and consuming hydrogen. The project, called Zeeland Waterstofland, is funded by the REACT-EU program and has been honored by the Province of Zeeland.

The innovative project addresses barriers such as:

No availability of flexible, economically attractive distribution unit (for transportation and storage) for supply of 350 to 750 kg of green hydrogen.

No fast and safe connection method available to load and unload at hydrogen terminals. Even when the highest levels of safety are required.

No availability of economic distribution to hydrogen filling stations (roads), and in the future to bunkering stations (waterways), and airports, and as a clean fuel for inland navigation (propulsion) and for smart heat and power for buildings and homes

Closed market, controlled by the main suppliers of industrial gases.

The project performs and demonstrates

Development, testing and validation of technical tools and socioeconomic models (business cases) for the implementation of the green hydrogen swapping tank-container system and demonstration of the flexible distribution method.

All to increase acceptance and implementation of distribution of carbon-free fuel and/or green building blocks with high potential impact.
